Plot summary
Matt Dillon has left the marshal's office and lives by trapping fur. Men after his rifle and pelts attack him on a riverbank, and with a knife wound in his back he drifts in a canoe until a wagoner pulls him out and brings him to Dodge City, Kansas. Townspeople know their former lawman, and they nurse him until, three weeks on, he wakes to find Miss Kitty there, back from New Orleans after word reached her that he was dying. In the territorial prison, gunslinger Will Mannon finishes twelve years and vows revenge on the judge and the marshal who sent him away. Fellow convict Jake Flagg hears the threat and decides to warn Dillon, an old friend.
