Plot summary
Dr. Anton Arcane, resurrected after his death, works with Dr. Lana Zurrell in a science laboratory in the Florida swamps. To slow his aging they combine genes from swamp animals with human genes, and the work yields an army of creatures known as Un-Men. Abigail Arcane, his stepdaughter, arrives in the swamps after her mother's death, looking for him. Arcane wants her for his experiments, and he has hired guns working for him. Swamp Thing, once the scientist Alec Holland, was changed into a bog creature years earlier when Arcane and his men confronted him, and he returns to battle Arcane.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Return of Swamp Thing (1989)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Jim Wynorski wanted Louis Jourdan, as Anton Arcane, to call Monique Gabrielle's character Miss Poinsettia "Points", a joke about her breasts. Jourdan refused, and after Wynorski asked if he had not just been in Octopussy, Jourdan stopped speaking to him for much of the shoot.
- Dick Durock, who played Swamp Thing, said the suit made filming hard: he hated wearing 50 to 70 pounds of weight in a Savannah, Georgia summer, but the money was there and it was a job.
- Heather Locklear had a hard time working with the model who played Swamp Thing's human form in a dream sequence, and as soon as his scene was finished he was asked to leave the set.
- Peter David wrote the novelization of the film. Disappointed with the script, he rewrote large chunks of the story, and the producers liked the changes enough to let the book be published as written.
