Plot summary
Five prospectors from Western Europe work a rich gold claim in Canada's Yukon. Hans Nelson leads the group, and the others are his wife Edith, Michael Dennin, Dutchy and Harky. Michael does the manual labor and found the gold for the group, yet the rest treat him as a subordinate, and resentment grows over a winter spent together in one isolated cabin. Michael comes in with a rifle and fires at Dutchy and Harky. Edith flings herself at him and takes the weapon; Hans beats him and wants to shoot him, and Edith has to hold her husband back. A hard freeze sets in, and the two survivors must keep their prisoner bound until the thaw lets them reach a court.

- Cold winter scenes for By the Law were shot in April, and the set flooding left the crew knee-deep in water while actors suffered electric shocks from damaged wire insulation in the flooded prospectors' house.
- The Yukon of By the Law was faked in Moscow Oblast near the Tsaritsynsky ponds: the shore of the Moscow River and two trees near the water stood in for the wild northern Yukon, with a prospectors' house built on the riverbank for the interior scenes.
- Lev Kuleshov and co-screenwriter Viktor Shklovsky expected the studio to back their low-budget chamber script with three actors in one setting, but it was rejected and only greenlit after a supportive article in the magazine Soviet Screen.
