Plot summary
It is 1944, and a new wave of bombing falls on Britain. Lily Watts, fourteen, and her siblings Pattie and Ted are sent from Manchester to Oakworth, a village in the West Riding of Yorkshire. There Bobbie Waterbury, her schoolmistress daughter Annie and Annie's son Thomas greet them. The villagers choose which children to take, and officials ask that siblings stay together, so the Watts children are left until Bobbie offers them her home. The three grow close to Thomas. A United States Army base stands nearby, and the first evening brings a disturbance. Local children confront the newcomers as they explore, and Thomas shows them his hideout, an old brake van near the railway station, where they discover a soldier named Abe McCarthy with an injured leg.
