Plot summary
Hired as a governess for the Miranda family, Harriet Winslow travels from Chihuahua across a Mexico engulfed by revolution. The men escorting her are secretly soldiers in Pancho Villa's army; they pack weapons into her luggage for the servants at the Miranda hacienda, who in turn help the advancing force of General Tomas Arroyo. When the hacienda is attacked, Ambrose Bierce, an American author known as the Old Gringo, joins the fighting on the revolutionaries' side, working a railway switch that sends a flatcar loaded with explosives to its target. Afterward, Winslow is drawn to both Bierce and Arroyo, who has come back to the estate where he was born.

- Burt Lancaster was signed to star in Old Gringo but Columbia ended his contract in December 1987 after it could not secure insurance for him, and Lancaster sued the studio for $1.5 million.
- Ennio Morricone was hired to compose the music for Old Gringo but left shortly after accepting, having agreed instead to score Cinema Paradiso after reading a script sent by producer Franco Cristaldi.
