Plot summary
Rick Kane is eighteen, out of high school in Arizona, where he won a wave tank contest. He uses the prize money for a summer in Hawaii before college, and plans to stay with a surfer he met six months earlier. The friend is tending bar when Rick finds him, and Rick ends up at Lance Burkhart's house with two pro surfers, Alex and Mark. Surfing at Sunset Beach shows him what a wave tank never taught: he cannot duck dive and gets in the way of Vince Moaloka, who leads a local group called The Hui, and is chased off the beach. With nowhere to go, he runs into Turtle, who introduces him to Chandler, a surfboard shaper and soul surfer. Rick also meets Kiani, a local girl and Vince's cousin, who helps him with local customs.

- Laird Hamilton's adoptive father Bill Hamilton was handmaking custom, high-performance surfboards on Oahu for North Shore big wave riders in the 1960s and 1970s, similar to the character Chandler in the film; in reality Laird loathes competition like the Chandler character does.
- The character of Rick Kane was loosely based on Connecticut born surfer Benjamin "Barney" Partyka, and the first-ever professional surfer, Corky Carroll, plays a competition announcer in the film.
