Peggy Mount
Biography
Peggy Mount was an English actress who built a long career out of domineering, larger-than-life women on stage, film and television. Born in Southend-on-Sea, she acted with local amateur companies before her first professional appearance in 1944, then spent years in provincial repertory, learning her craft. Her break came in 1955, when she created the role of Emma Hornett, the domestic tyrant of the comedy Sailor Beware, and carried it into the West End. She reprised it in the 1956 film and became a regular television performer, playing Ada Larkins in the sitcom The Larkins. Later she took more serious parts, including the title role in Brecht's Mother Courage at Birmingham Rep in 1977, and joined the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare companies. Her films included Hotel Paradiso (1966) and Oliver! (1968), and her last stage role was in Uncle Vanya in 1996.

Big break
Peggy Mount created the role of Emma Hornett in the comedy Sailor Beware! during a Worthing repertory season, and although London managers sought a better-known name for the West End, they failed and gave her the part, making her an overnight celebrity.
First role
Mount's first professional appearance came at Keighley, Yorkshire, in 1944 in Hindle Wakes, after she had taken weekend lessons from a drama tutor, Phyllis Reader, and performed with local amateur companies.
