Plot summary
Sophie lives in Mrs. Clonkers's orphanage, having lost both parents as a baby. Waking in the night, she sees a cloaked elderly giant using a trumpet to blow something into a window along the street. The giant spots her, pulls her out through the window and carries her off to a strange land called Giant Country. In his cave he introduces himself as the Big Friendly Giant, who sends dreams into children's bedrooms at night, and warns her that the nine other giants in that country are vicious people-eaters. Rather than steal from humans, he lives on snozzcumbers, revolting vegetables shaped like giant cucumbers, the only crop that grows there. He says he brought her away so that she cannot tell anyone she saw him and start a giant hunt. The two become friends.

- The BFG was the only adaptation of Roald Dahl's work released during his lifetime that the author himself praised; director Brian Cosgrove said Dahl stood up and applauded in delight after a screening.
- The BFG took over three years to produce, and 750,000 cels were used against watercolour backgrounds designed by a team led by DC Thomson cartoonist John Geering.
- The film used rotoscoping for Queen Elizabeth II and her servants; it was first used on Sophie until it was found that Jean Flynn and Meryl Edge could animate Sophie's movements without a reference.
- Roald Dahl based Sophie, the girl who befriends the BFG, on his granddaughter Sophie Dahl, and the animators took the character's look from the John Lennon glasses the young Sophie Dahl wore at the time.
- John Hambley scripted The BFG after Brian Trueman's initial draft was rejected; Hambley also executive produced the film.
- The BFG was the last role of Ballard Berkeley, the voice of the Head of the Army, who died in 1988.
