Plot summary
In Guadeloupe, Joseph Bologne is born to Nanon, an enslaved woman, and Georges de Bologne, a white French slaveowner. His father sees his talent for music, dancing and fencing and sends him to a boarding school in Paris. White peers and teachers there mistreat him, yet he excels at the violin and at composition. Marie Antoinette watches him win a fencing contest at the royal court and grants him the title Chevalier de Saint-Georges. He becomes a favored companion of the Queen. Marie-Madeleine Guimard pursues him, but he loves Marie-Joséphine de Comarieu.
