John Steiner

Biography

John Steiner, who died in 2022, was an English actor who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company. He played Monsieur Dupere in Peter Brook's production of Marat/Sade, reprising the part on Broadway and in the 1967 film adaptation. After television work that included an episode of The Saint, he moved to Italy, where he found steady work in exploitation pictures and B-movies, from westerns and war films to horror such as Mario Bava's Shock and Dario Argento's Tenebrae (1982). He also appeared in Yor, the Hunter from the Future (1983). A favorite of Tinto Brass, he featured in Salon Kitty and Caligula. He worked steadily in Italy into the late 1980s and retired from acting in 1991, later discussing his Italian films in interviews and DVD extras.
