Glenda Jackson
Biography
Glenda Jackson was an English actress who won two Academy Awards. Born in Birkenhead, she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made her professional stage debut in 1957. After joining the Royal Shakespeare Company, she appeared in Peter Brook's production of Marat/Sade and its 1967 film version. Her performance in Women in Love (1969) brought her first Academy Award, and A Touch of Class (1973) earned her a second. She won a BAFTA for Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971) and was nominated for an Academy Award for that film, and she played Elizabeth I in Mary, Queen of Scots (1971). She received two Primetime Emmy Awards for Elizabeth R. Her film comedy work included House Calls (1978) and Hopscotch (1980). In later years she returned to acting, winning a Tony Award for Three Tall Women and BAFTA and International Emmy awards for Elizabeth Is Missing (2019). The Great Escaper (2023) was her final film.

A role that slipped away
Jackson was interested in playing Sister Jeanne in The Devils, Russell's next film, but after the script was rewritten she turned the part down, not wanting a third neurotic character in a row.
Getting ready for a role
For the BBC serial Elizabeth R, Jackson shaved her head to take the part of Queen Elizabeth I. After it aired on PBS in the US, she won two Primetime Emmy Awards for that performance.
Early training
Jackson auditioned for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London in 1954 and received a discretionary award from the Cheshire education committee that helped finance her acting course.
First role
Glenda Jackson's first appearance on film came in This Sporting Life, a kitchen sink drama from 1963, where she played a bit part.
