Plot summary
Detroit, 1952. Aretha Franklin is ten, the daughter of C. L. Franklin, who leads the city's largest Baptist church. He has her sing at parties in their house, while her mother Barbara, who does not live with C. L., tells her to be independent. After a family friend behaves predatorily toward her and Barbara dies, Aretha stops speaking for weeks, and only her father's demand brings her voice back in church. Seven years later she is a teenage mother of two boys whose father she refuses to name. She sings gospel on tour with Martin Luther King Jr. and meets the producer Ted White, though her father warns him away. C. L. then arranges a meeting with John Hammond of Columbia Records, and Aretha signs to record jazz standards.
