Plot summary
In a 2002 interview, Puchi looks back on her husband, salsa singer Héctor Lavoe. Héctor Pérez arrives in New York from Puerto Rico against his father's wishes, meets Eddie, and discovers the salsa sound filling the streets. He becomes the lead singer of a bar band, and Willie Colón and Johnny Pacheco approach him with a deal from Fania Records, which suggests the name Héctor Lavoe. Héctor notices Puchi dancing at the club her brother Papo manages, and the two grow closer at the sweet 16 party Papo throws for her. He speaks of his mother's early death and of his brother, killed the night he reached the city, and she tells him they will take care of each other.
