Plot summary
In a remote forest compound cut off from the outside world, a cult of women and girls lives under Shepherd, its messianic leader and only man. The younger women, the Sisters, dress in blue; the older women, the Wives, dress in shades of red. The group keeps sheep for food and for rituals. Selah, a teenager born into the cult, wonders about the mother she never knew. After a fight with one of the Sisters, she is sent to a dark hut where menstruating women are kept apart, and there she meets Sarah, a Wife marked by scars across her chest who warns her about the Shepherd's violent side. When a police officer tells the Shepherd that the group must leave, he announces a journey to a new home.
