Plot summary
Ron Clark teaches at an elementary school in his North Carolina hometown, where his methods lift test scores and colleagues and students value him. In 1998 he moves to New York City and waits tables while he looks for a school where he can be more useful. Inner Harlem Elementary separates its students by potential. Principal Turner, whose job depends on the school's scores, would rather put the newcomer in the honors class. Clark chooses the sixth graders with the lowest marks. They disregard him or ignore him outright, and he works out that he has to understand them, as individuals and as a group, before the standardized curriculum can reach them. Marissa Vega, a colleague from his restaurant job, encourages him.
