Plot summary
David Norliss has been writing a book that debunks spiritualists and fakers, and then he vanishes from his home in San Francisco, leaving a pile of audio tapes behind. His publisher, Sanford T. Evans, plays the first tape and hears Norliss recount a case he had taken on. Ellen Sterns Cort, a widow whose estate lies near Monterey, told Norliss that her husband, the artist James Cort, attacked her one night after his death. James had suffered from a crippling disease; he turned to the occult after meeting Mademoiselle Jeckiel at one of his exhibitions. A scarab ring she gave him was buried with him at his request. Norliss drives to Carmel to discuss Ellen's account with Sheriff Tom Hartley.
