Plot summary
The man who takes up the deputy sheriff's post in a small California town is not Brian Mars. He shot Mars, buried the body beside a road and assumed his identity, and he is troubled by dreams of himself as a child finding his father's body hanging from a rope. Meanwhile the town's deputy, Sam Wayburn, has taken up with Laura Winslow, whose husband Jake is cruel, rich and powerful. After Jake beats and rapes Laura, she and Sam decide Jake should die. Learning that the stranger keeps an unregistered gun, the pair plan to shoot Jake with it and pin the killing on the newcomer.
