Plot summary
Father Alex Bernier belongs to the Carolingian Order, an old sect whose work is exorcism and the fight against demonic forces. Its leader, Father Dominic, has died in Rome, and Cardinal Driscoll, a Vatican official and candidate for the papacy, sends Alex to find out how. Mara Williams, an artist Alex once tried to exorcise, says she senses danger around him and travels with him. Examining Dominic's body, Alex notices markings he reads as the signature of a sin-eater, someone who can grant absolution without the Church's sanction. The Vatican insists sin-eaters are not real and refuses to bury Dominic in consecrated ground, so Alex holds a funeral himself in the Carolingian cemetery. He asks his fellow priest Thomas Garrett for help.
