Plot summary
Princess Ahmanet stands in line to rule Egypt until the pharaoh has a son. She bargains with the deity Set, obtains demonic powers through a ceremonial dagger, murders her family, and is caught. Egyptian priests mummify her alive and entomb her sarcophagus far from Egypt. In the present, construction workers in London find a crusader knight's tomb holding an Egyptian ruby; Dr. Henry Jekyll takes over the dig. In Iraq, the soldiers Nick Morton and Chris Vail open Ahmanet's tomb and bring her back without knowing it. Jenny Halsey and the soldiers carry the sarcophagus to Britain.

- Jenny Lumet, brought in for rewrites, turned the Mummy from a man into a woman without notifying Universal beforehand, aiming to humanize the villain instead of making them "evil for the sake of evil" or pining for a lost love.
- Writers Christopher McQuarrie and Dylan Kussman were among those brought in to reshape the script into a full-fledged Tom Cruise vehicle, trimming Sofia Boutella's role, adding a possession plot point and reportedly leaving Universal unimpressed while Cruise kept reworking the film.
- For the plane crash, the production used the Vomit Comet and parabolic flights to fake weightlessness, doing 64 takes that left many crew members sick; Tom Cruise's insistence changed Kurtzman's plan to shoot it with wires and a rotating set.
- Tom Hardy was the first actor courted to play Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but talks fell apart; the studio then turned to Javier Bardem, with no deal reached, before casting Russell Crowe in the role in May 2016.
- Director Alex Kurtzman cast Sofia Boutella as the mummy Ahmanet after seeing her largely mute performance in Kingsman: The Secret Service, saying that her eyes showed a whole performance that no amount of prosthetics or CG would hide.
- An IMAX trailer released on December 20, 2016 went out with the wrong audio track, missing most sound effects and exposing Tom Cruise's grunts and screams; it spawned memes and IMAX issued DMCA takedown notices to stop the spread.
- Composer Brian Tyler wrote about half an hour of music before filming even began, then recorded over two hours with an 84-piece orchestra and 32-voice choir, making the soundtrack album longer than the 110-minute film.
- The Mummy was meant to kick-start Universal's Dark Universe of classic movie monsters, but the film's poor reception led the studio to cancel the shared universe.
