Plot summary
Andy is an introverted young man in 1950s America. His mother is confined to an institution. Andy remains in the shadow of his stoic father, Frederick, and works at Frederick's ice rink. After Frederick dies suddenly on the ice, Dr. Wallace Fiennes, a family friend, invites Andy to travel with him. Fiennes takes Andy along as photographer, journalist and assistant. Fiennes moves from asylum to asylum, performing lobotomies and advocating for the procedure. Andy documents the operations reluctantly.
