Plot summary

Elise Donner founded and co-owns Bright World, a travel agency she now shares with her ex-husband Dan, who gained half of it in their divorce and uses it to promote his girlfriend Drew. Nick Derr is a divorce lawyer and a workaholic, one of two people in line for this year's single partner position at a firm that has promoted only married men with families. The two meet at a shopping center in November, both avoiding the Christmas songs and decorations, and admit how little they like the season. Nick proposes a contract: they will pose as a couple until Christmas Eve, giving him a steady girlfriend and giving Elise a way to face Dan and Drew. They call it the Mistletoe Promise, and Nick tells only his paralegal Ashley.
