Did you know?!Facts and trivia about End of Days (1999)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • SPOILERHalfway through shooting, Arnold Schwarzenegger was told that his character should die in the movie; Universal blanched at the idea, so the ending was shot both ways, and everybody agreed that the dying ending was the better one.
  • The role of Jericho Cane was originally written for Tom Cruise, who instead chose to make Magnolia; the female lead went through Liv Tyler, who declined over contract issues, and Kate Winslet, who dropped out, before Robin Tunney was cast.
  • Actress Miriam Margolyes complained about Arnold Schwarzenegger's behavior on set in 2016, and in 2022 reported that he had farted in her face while they were filming; Schwarzenegger did not respond to the allegations.
  • Schwarzenegger later said Peter Hyams was "the wrong director" for the film, adding he only trusted the choice because Hyams had been recommended by James Cameron.
  • Directors Sam Raimi and Guillermo del Toro both turned down the chance to direct End of Days, and Marcus Nispel then dropped out over budget and script problems before Peter Hyams took over.
  • End of Days was nominated for three Razzie Awards, for Arnold Schwarzenegger, Gabriel Byrne and director Peter Hyams, and was pre-nominated for Worst Picture, but that Worst Picture nomination was withdrawn just before the ceremony.
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger received a salary of $25 million for his role; the film was profitable thanks to strong international revenue and DVD sales, but its final numbers fell short of Universal Studios' expectations.
