Plot summary

A prosperous, quick-witted farmer in a small Italian town, Elia Codogno lives as a grumpy loner. He is good to the people who work for him and drives everyone else away, and he turns aside every effort by his housekeeper Mamie to find him a wife. Lisa Silvestri, a young city woman, is traveling to her fiancé when her car fails in a storm, and she takes shelter at his farmstead. Curious about Elia, she chooses to stay and to chip away at his rough manner. He feels the pull of her company but holds on to his harsh ways and looks for ways to send her off.
