Plot summary
Mortgage losses have left investment banks holding large real estate assets. Henry Paulson, the Treasury Secretary, has already guaranteed the sale of Bear Stearns to JPMorgan Chase at a fraction of its value, and he is wary of funding more rescues. When Lehman Brothers loses value, he declines to step in, and the bank's chief executive, Richard Fuld, makes a string of poor decisions. Timothy Geithner, who leads the New York Federal Reserve, pushes for a deal joining Lehman with Bank of America. Paulson wants other banks to guarantee it and calls their chiefs to an emergency meeting.
