Plot summary
Clover is nearly finished her veterinary training when her brother Harry dies and she returns to the Catto farm on the Somerset Levels. A party had marked the title to the farm passing to Harry. The buildings are dilapidated after recent flooding of the levels. Her father Aubrey is distracted and distant. He will not accept that Harry took his own life and says it must have been an accident. Clover helps with the milking. Aubrey says the farm is failing and that insurance will not cover the flood damage. He plans to sell half the herd.
