The Law Is the Law (1958) on Netflix

Plot summary

In the village of Assola, the French-Italian border runs through the streets, and straight through the Two Borders Hotel as well. Ferdinand Pastorelli, a French customs officer, spends his days trying to catch Giuseppe La Paglia, a Neapolitan smuggler who moves goods across the line. On a day of celebration Ferdinand arrests Giuseppe after a chase, but arrives late to the parade where he was meant to carry the French flag. At the reception in the hotel, Giuseppe, still in custody, points out that Ferdinand was born in the hotel kitchen, which stands on the Italian side. The town authorities then look into where the birth was recorded.
