Plot summary
Henri Danglard owns Le Paravent Chinois, a fashionable Paris nightclub that earns little, where his mistress Lola performs a belly dance. One night he visits La Reine Blanche, a plain dance hall in Montmartre where the old cancan is still performed. There he notices Nini, a young laundress, and urges her to train in dance for a production he has in mind. Danglard sells the club and, using funds from Baron Walter, a banker drawn to Lola, purchases La Reine Blanche, planning to tear it down and build the Moulin Rouge, a house for glamorous girls who dance the cancan. Paulo, Nini's boyfriend, is jealous.
