Plot summary
The gendarmes of Saint-Tropez are picked to represent France at a law enforcement conference in New York City, and the orders say the men are to come on their own, with no wives and no children. Nicole, Cruchot's daughter, longs to see New York and asks to join him. Cruchot refuses, since breaking the rule could damage his career. He sets off for Le Havre by plane and train. Nicole, meanwhile, accepts a ride from a friend and gets aboard the liner that will carry the delegation across the Atlantic, keeping out of sight as a stowaway. On the crossing Cruchot spots her among the lifeboats, but his captain tells him that his eyes are playing tricks on him.
