Plot summary
Robert Graves is a young British war poet and novelist. He lives in Britain in the 1920s with his wife, Nancy Nicholson, and their four children, and the marriage is already unsettled. He meets Laura Riding, a writer from America, and the two become romantically involved. Riding moves into the couple's cottage, and the three of them share the home as a menage a trois, an arrangement that defies the conventions of the society around them. Geoffrey Phibbs, an Irish poet, then arrives and joins the household, so the three of them become four, and rivalries grow among them.
