Plot summary
Jack Bull Chiles' family owns a plantation near Lexington, Missouri, and Jack and Jake Roedel are friends there when the Civil War begins. Jake's father, an immigrant from Germany, warns his son that other Southerners distrust foreigners. Jayhawkers burn the plantation and kill Jack's father, but Jack gets away with Jake. A year later the two belong to the First Missouri Irregulars, a guerrilla band loyal to Missouri's Confederate government, raiding Unionist Jayhawkers with the help of Southern households. Their comrades include George Clyde, Daniel Holt, a Black man, and Pitt Mackeson, who resents Jake's education. The men spend the winter in a dugout on the Evans farm, where Sue Lee Shelley Evans, a widow, brings them food and becomes close to Jack.
