Plot summary
Anna Leonowens comes to Bangkok with her son Louis to teach the wives and children of King Mongkut, but the house she was promised outside the palace is not given to her. Kralahome tells her the King breaks his word, and she plans to leave Siam. The royal children change her mind, along with a visit to the King's workshop, where he builds miniature trains and balloons. She begins lessons for the royal family. A young woman from Burma, Tuptim, is brought to the palace as a gift for the King, and in the gardens she meets Prince Chulalongkorn, who does not tell her who he is. When Anna learns her pupils have never left the palace, she takes them around the city to show them how others live.
