Plot summary
Lisa Spinelli teaches kindergarten on Staten Island and is unhappy with her life. Her marriage to Grant has lost its passion, and her teenage children, Josh and Lainie, keep their distance. Each week she attends a poetry class led by Simon, and her own poems are dismissed as derivative. Jimmy, one of her students, is often picked up late by his babysitter. Waiting to be collected, he recites a poem he wrote, and Lisa overhears it. At her poetry class she shares the poem, and it draws praise from her classmates and from Simon. Lisa becomes convinced that Jimmy is a prodigy and gives her time to developing his ability. She asks his babysitter, Becca, to write down the poems he recites.
