Plot summary
Kevin Lewis is a boy growing up on New Addington, a small council estate south of London, in the 1980s. The family around him is violent and abusive. The film, a British drama, follows his adolescence and his young adult years as he drifts into a life of crime, and his story comes from his own autobiography. The makers chose to tone down the abuse, and Lewis has said that viewers will sense what goes on and reach their own conclusions. KT Tunstall wrote a song, "Boy", for the film, which was affiliated on release with the NSPCC, a children's charity.

- Filming on the South Oxhey council estate, on the borders of North London and Hertfordshire, was disrupted on the first day when the Criminal Investigation Department removed a dead body from nearby woods; Kevin Lewis' own home estate, New Addington, had been scouted but ruled out because of the distance.
- Augustus Prew was not first choice for the teenage Kevin Lewis; the filmmakers wanted an actor who looked more like Rupert Friend. Prew had a photographer friend shoot him in the same suit and pose, wearing blue contact lenses, and won the part.
- To play Kevin Lewis, Augustus Prew lost over a stone in weight and wore shoes four sizes too small and clothes that were too small; he stayed hungry during the shoot because the real Kevin Lewis told him he was always hungry and his muscles ached.
- Make-up artists had to make Natascha McElhone less attractive for her role, and the result was so accurate that Kevin Lewis had difficulty being on set and walked off when he heard her shouting as the real-life Gloria.
- To learn how to box for the film, Rupert Friend was sent to train with Steve Collins, a former WBO world middleweight and super middleweight champion.
