Plot summary
Evie Jackson is a struggling artist in New York City who does freelance catering work with her best friend Grace. After her mother dies, a DNA test leads her to a cousin in England, Oliver Alexander. He tells her about Evie's great-grandmother Emmaline, who had a child in secret with a black footman. Oliver invites Evie to a family wedding, and she travels to New Carfax Abbey in Whitby. There she meets the estate's owner, Walter De Ville, the maid Mrs. Swift, and the maids of honor Lucy and Viktoria. Evie and Walter are drawn to each other.
