Plot summary
At Beatrice High in 1993, a prop malfunction during a staging of The Gallows leaves student Charlie Grimille dead in front of the audience, his parents among them. Twenty years later the school mounts the play again. Football player Reese Houser auditions only to get closer to Pfeifer Ross, who has a part, and lands the lead. Looking for a way out, he goes along with his friend Ryan Shoos, who suggests wrecking the set. The night before the performance, Reese, Ryan and Ryan's girlfriend Cassidy Spilker slip into the school and start taking the set apart, until they hear Pfeifer in the hallway. When they try to leave, the doors will not open and their phones show no reception.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Gallows (2015)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Development began in 2011 when Chris Lofing and Travis Cluff uploaded a trailer that went viral. Producer Dean Schneider of Management 360 saw it, invited them to his Los Angeles office and signed a representation and financing contract, then brought in Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions.
- The Gallows grossed $22.7 million in North America and $20.2 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $43 million, against a budget of only $100,000.
- On Jason Blum's advice, Lofing and Cluff put in more work, and over the next two years the vast majority of the film, about 80 percent of it, was re-shot.
- Though the film is set in Lofing's hometown of Beatrice, Nebraska, every scene in the theatrical version was shot in Fresno, California. Scenes shot in Beatrice for the first cut were dropped when Blumhouse picked up the film, and turned up on the DVD and Blu-ray releases.
- Cassidy Gifford joined at the last minute, after an actress from the original version had lost a lot of weight. Gifford was recommended by her famous parents, but Cluff emphasized that she won the role on her own merits.
- The actors performed their own stunts and, according to Lofing, no major CGI at all was used anywhere in the film.
