Plot summary
The wreckage of a space shuttle carries an organism that spreads across the United States, and people begin to lose their emotions, insisting their loved ones are not themselves. Carol Bennell, a psychiatrist in Washington, D.C., hears it first from a longtime patient. Her ex-husband Tucker Kaufman, a CDC official, is among those investigating the crash. On Halloween her son Oliver finds a patch of skin on a partygoer, and Carol takes the sample to her friend Ben Driscoll, a research scientist, who examines it with Dr. Stephen Galeano. As more of the city turns cold and detached, Carol tries to get back to Oliver.

- Warner Bros. was unhappy with Hirschbiegel's results and hired the Wachowskis to rewrite the film, then hired director James McTeigue for uncredited re-shoots that would cost $10 million; after 13 months of inactivity, those re-shoots took place in January 2007 to increase action scenes and add a twist ending.
- During the re-shooting, Nicole Kidman was in a Jaguar being towed by a stunt driver when an accident left her briefly hospitalized with several broken ribs, though she was able to get back to work soon after.
- The original title Invasion of the Body Snatchers was shortened to Invasion, then changed to The Visiting so it would not be confused with ABC's TV series Invasion, and in October 2006 changed again to The Invasion after the TV series was canceled.
- The Invasion grossed $15.1 million domestically and $25.1 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $40.2 million, against a production budget of $65-$80 million.
- The Invasion is the fourth film adaptation of the 1955 novel The Body Snatchers by Jack Finney, following Don Siegel's 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Philip Kaufman's 1978 remake and Abel Ferrara's 1993 Body Snatchers.
- Nicole Kidman was cast to star in the film, then titled Invasion, receiving a salary of close to $17 million.
