Plot summary
Sebastian Caine leads a research team that is trying to make living creatures invisible for the military. Working with him are Linda McKay, his former girlfriend, Matt Kensington, Sarah Kennedy, Janice Walton, Carter Abbey and Frank Chase. Caine devises a way to reverse the invisibility, and the team tests it on an invisible gorilla. He keeps the result from an oversight committee that includes his mentor, Howard Kramer, saying he needs more time. He is also pursuing Linda, not knowing she is involved with Matt. Eager to be the first invisible man, he convinces Linda and Matt to run an unauthorized human trial on him while the others are kept uninformed.

- Hollow Man was one of very few films allowed to shoot directly in front of the Pentagon, and Paul Verhoeven expressed surprise that the script was approved, given its theme of the United States government commissioning experiments into making living beings invisible.
- A fake review attributed to the critic David Manning was revealed in late 2001 as a hoax, created by Sony to fake publicity for the film.
- Six weeks into filming, Elisabeth Shue tore her Achilles tendon, shutting down production on June 25 for over seven weeks; producers at one point considered replacing her, but shooting resumed on August 18, 1999 following her recovery.
- Paul Verhoeven told The Playlist in 2016 that Hollow Man was "probably the worst film I've ever done", and as of 2026 it remains his final film produced by a major American production company.
- Guy Pearce and Edward Norton were considered for the role of Sebastian before Kevin Bacon was chosen, in part for his "ability to be both charming and diabolical", and Bacon later recalled reading a press story suggesting Robert Downey Jr. had been offered the title role.

- To make the digital clone appear more like Kevin Bacon, information about "every aspect" of his body was recorded and the entirety of his body, including his genitals, was scanned into a computer.
- The scene in which an invisible Sebastian rapes a neighbor was shot in two versions; the harsher second one, showing her screaming, was dropped because preview audiences reacted with disdain, deeming it "painful" and feeling it alienated them from Sebastian too early.
