Plot summary

Bruce Cogburn wrote a bestseller called The Infernal Machine. The book came out decades earlier. He has spent twenty-five years in self-imposed isolation in the American southwest, driven there by a young man who opened fire at a university in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1981, killing thirteen people and blaming Cogburn's only book for the act. Then letters begin arriving at his post office box, sent by a writer named William DuKent who wants an interview. Cogburn drives forty-five minutes to a phone booth, where he leaves messages that grow more threatening, demanding that the letters stop. As the correspondence continues, his drinking and his suspicion deepen.
