Plot summary
Lucy offers Charlie Brown the chance to kick her football for the holiday, then pulls it away. Charlie Brown and Sally have little enthusiasm for Thanksgiving; Sally minds the essays her teachers assign, and Linus explains what the day means. As the Browns get ready to leave for their grandmother's, Peppermint Patty telephones: her father is away, so she invites herself, and then Marcie and Franklin, to Charlie Brown's house for dinner. He can barely make toast and will not be home. Linus points out there is time before the family leaves and brings in Snoopy and Woodstock. Snoopy sets a ping pong table outside, and the friends put together a meal of toast, popcorn, pretzel sticks, jelly beans and sundaes.

- Except for the opening football gag, this was the first Peanuts TV special to have a completely original script, without relying on the comic strip for its material.
- When the child voice actors were replaced for the next television special, one recasting kept it in the family: Robin Kohn was succeeded in her role by her own younger sister, Melanie Kohn.
- The score was recorded by the Vince Guaraldi Quintet on August 20 and 22, September 4 and October 1, 1973, at Wally Heider Studios, with Tom Harrell on trumpet, Chuck Bennett on trombone, Seward McCain on electric bass and Mike Clark on drums.
- Apple TV+ must provide a three-day window in November in which the special is available for free; on November 18, 2020, Apple announced an agreement to air it commercial free on PBS and PBS Kids on Sunday, November 22, the Sunday before Thanksgiving.
- Apple renewed its exclusive streaming rights to the special in an agreement announced October 2, 2025, the 75th anniversary of the first published Peanuts comic strip.
