Plot summary
Taken from a Los Angeles block in a burst of white light, eighty people wake inside an enclosed industrial area ringed by barricades. A voice speaks inside each head in that person's own language and tone, announcing a race that only one of them will survive. Contestants must stay on the winding path, keep off the grass, and avoid being lapped twice. The group is a mix of ages and circumstances, including people who are athletic and people who are disabled, and some with no home. Eddie, who served in the military and lost a leg, is there with Justin, a friend from his service days, and Amy, who is deaf, has a deaf male companion with her. Panic sends a few of them onto the grass, and they die.
