Plot summary
Marvolo Gaunt lives with his son Morfin and his daughter Merope in a household that has fallen into poverty and disorder, though the family claims descent from the Hogwarts founder Salazar Slytherin and looks down on wizards with Muggle ancestry. Marvolo is enraged that Merope has fallen for a wealthy local Muggle, Tom Riddle, and both he and Morfin mistreat her. When a wizarding law is broken, the Ministry of Magic traces the offense to the Gaunt home and sends Aurors to arrest the family. Merope, who has been leaving the house in secret to see Tom, comes upon a potion she believes will make him fall in love with her.
