Plot summary
Bilbo Baggins lives a quiet life in the Shire, until the wizard Gandalf arrives and invites him to share in an adventure. Thirteen dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, gather at Bilbo's home to discuss a quest. They intend to travel east to the Lonely Mountain, the lost kingdom of Erebor, and take back their treasure from the dragon Smaug. Because a company of thirteen is unlucky, they need a fourteenth member and a burglar. Gandalf proposes Bilbo for the role, though Bilbo wants no part of it. The dwarves offer him a share of the profits and leave the next morning. Bilbo discovers that Thorin has signed the contract, and he decides to follow them.
