Plot summary
Leg braces for a degenerative spinal disease do not keep Rickey Hill off the baseball field in his small Texas town, where he is regarded as a batting prodigy. His father, James, a pastor, wants to protect him from more injury and urges him to pursue preaching. Evicted from their home, the family heads to Oklahoma, and when their car breaks down, the people who stop to help offer James a position at their church. Rickey has trouble settling in until he finds children playing baseball. A boy on the mound taunts him about the braces, and Rickey connects on a pitch. Joining the local team requires a parent's signature, so his brother Robert forges their father's name.
