Plot summary
Gloria Steinem's life unfolds across decades, with versions of her riding a Greyhound bus and recalling what came before. Her father sells antiques, and his make-do attitude charms young Gloria while irritating her mother. Her parents separate, and she becomes her mother's caretaker as her mother slips into depression. She finds articles her mother wrote under a male byline before marrying. A fellowship takes her to India, and she returns to America seeking work as a journalist, encountering casual sexism and harassment along the way. She writes about fashion and dating, then reports on the conditions waitresses face at the Playboy Club.
