Plot summary
Mickey Pearson, an American who won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford, sold marijuana as a student and left the university to become a drug baron; he grows cannabis in laboratories on the estates of aristocrats who need money for their homes. Middle-aged now, he wants to sell the business and retire alongside his wife, Rosalind. The buyer he has picked is Matthew Berger, an American billionaire, at a price of £400 million. After Pearson shows Berger a laboratory, a Chinese gangster named Dry Eye offers to take the empire off his hands, and Pearson refuses. Meanwhile the tabloid editor Big Dave, hoping to expose Pearson, hires the private detective Fletcher to examine his dealings with one of the landlords, Lord Pressfield.

- Three years after the film's release, the actor Mickey De Hara, who played Turbo in Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla, sued Ritchie, saying The Gentlemen copied characters, characterisations and plot from a RocknRolla sequel screenplay he had offered, most blatantly in the Coach and 'The Toddlers' scene. Ritchie denied the claims at the London High Court in August 2023.
- Ritchie's defense admitted that discussions took place about a possible RocknRolla sequel or trilogy and that he used some aspects of De Hara's screenplay for The Gentlemen, but said De Hara's contribution fell below Writers Guild of America and Writers Guild of Great Britain credit thresholds.
