Biography

Joseph Schildkraut was an Austrian-American actor who trained with Max Reinhardt in Berlin and performed in Germany and Austria before moving to the United States in 1920. He also acted on Broadway, including in Peer Gynt, and in 1921 starred in the first American staging of Ferenc Molnár's Liliom. His early films included Orphans of the Storm (1921), where he played the Chevalier de Vaudrey, and The King of Kings (1927) as Judas Iscariot. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Dreyfus in The Life of Emile Zola (1937). Other notable roles were the duc d'Orléans in Marie Antoinette (1938) and the villain in The Shop Around the Corner (1940). He appeared as Otto Frank in the stage and film versions of The Diary of Anne Frank (1959), earning a Golden Globe nomination, and on television he hosted Joseph Schildkraut Presents and was nominated for an Emmy for Sam Benedict.
