Plot summary

On a golf course, Buster, a young bluebird who has run away from his siblings, meets Rex, a Tyrannosaurus, and asks how he got there; Rex tells his story. In the Cretaceous Period, Rex was chasing a small dinosaur when a flying ship took him aboard. Its owner, Captain Neweyes, hopes to show today's children genuine dinosaurs, and with his assistant Vorb he feeds Rex, the Triceratops Woog, the Pterodactyl Elsa and the Parasaurolophus Dweeb a cereal called Brain Grain that gives them intelligence and gentleness. Neweyes intends to hand them to Dr. Julia Bleeb at the Museum of Natural History and tells them to stay away from his brother, Professor Screweyes. Left in the East River in 1993, the dinosaurs fail to find Bleeb, but two runaways, Louie and Cecilia, offer to guide them.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story (1993)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • John Malkovich was originally set to voice Professor Screweyes, but he was let go after Steven Spielberg rejected his performance as too dark and frightening for the animated film.
  • Christopher Lloyd was considered next for Professor Screweyes; a severe cold pushed his recording session back a week, and Spielberg rejected that performance too, because he “just sounded like the character from Back to the Future and a little bit of Jim Ignatowski from Taxi”, so Kenneth Mars got the role.
  • After a poor test screening, then-Universal CEO Sidney Sheinberg demanded a million dollars in late changes to the film, including adding the Macy's parade sequence built around the song 'Roll Back the Rock,' written by James Horner and Thomas Dolby and sung in the credits by Little Richard.
  • A fully animated, full-color sequence of Professor Screweyes' frightening circus had to be cut to keep the G rating; it resurfaced on YouTube in May 2009 and still contains part of John Malkovich's original, scrapped vocal performance.
  • Tom Jones actually recorded the end-credits cover song before Little Richard did; his finished version was shelved because of a dispute with his record label at the time.
  • Actor Yaphet Kotto was originally cast as the Triceratops Woog but had to drop out after only one recording session, and the role went to René Le Vant instead.
  • Mickey Rooney was suggested for the role of Captain Neweyes, but the idea was overruled because Rooney was deemed “too difficult”. Cronkite was cast in the part instead.
