Plot summary
Halley and her six-year-old daughter Moonee rent a room at the Magic Castle Inn and Suites, a motel in Kissimmee, Florida, a short drive from the Walt Disney World parks. With school out, Moonee spends her days with Scooty, who lives downstairs, and with Dicky from the Futureland Inn nearby. When the children spit on a parked car, Stacy, who owns it, complains to Bobby, the motel's manager, and Dicky's father grounds him. Moonee and Scooty then befriend Jancey, Stacy's granddaughter. Halley no longer works as a stripper and cannot cover the rent, so she starts selling knockoff perfume to tourists with Moonee in tow. Bobby handles repairs and keeps watch over the children.
