Plot summary
Earth's atmosphere has grown too toxic for people to survive long exposure, and the corporation Aethera controls the supply of AIRemedy, the drug it says shields users from the toxins. Ella McPhee, a famous model in Aethera's employment, has been fatalistic since her mother Fia's suicide a year earlier. Her drug-dealing ex-boyfriend Tully steals a vial he believes holds a new party drug from his supplier Spider. At a party, Ella finds Tully with her dresser Gina and, distraught, swallows the vial's contents. She collapses and wakes with mutagenetic changes, among them enhanced strength and gliding ability. Aethera's head of research, Eric O'Connors, has had Spider's group under surveillance and sends security forces after her.
