Plot summary
Ronan and Beatrix each get a message from their father, Alex, asking them to meet him at a building at a set address. They arrive separately at his house instead, find him gone, and Ronan picks up a strange ball-shaped device. Harold, Beatrix's friend and a public defender, joins the search over Ronan's objections and suggests the police, who have no evidence of wrongdoing to act on. At the address they find an empty building covered in graffiti about alternate timelines. The building carries them to an Earth wrecked by nuclear blasts, where a patrol shoots pedestrians; they run back inside and meet Polly, a traveler between worlds, who says the building moves on to a random world unless they return within 36 hours.
